More about Enrichment/Enhancement Activities (10% of Grade)

Philosophy: Students will greatly benefit from musical enrichment activities and orchestra-related community experiences. In addition to helping you to grow as a musician, these activities will also help to make you a well-rounded individual with positive character traits. 10% of your grade will be based on the following point system (per grading term):

10 points in any combination will give a student the full enrichment portion of their overall grade.

10 points: Private lessons on your major string instrument
3 points: Perform as a member of an extra-curricular ensemble (fiddlers, GYSO, church, etc)
3 points: Research project and Class Presentation (Preapproved)
3 points: GMEA auditions and/or Performances
3 points: Regular and consistent participation in OLT meetings
3 points: Regular and consistent participation in extra-curricular ensemble rehearsals
3 points: Summertime String Camp or Summertime Lessons (Applied to following Fall semester)
1-5 points: Service / community projects to benefit the orchestra program.
1-2 points: Attend a performance.  Bring proof/evidence of your attendance.

Private Lessons

If a student is studying privately with weekly lessons (30 minute minimum), they must have their private instructor complete a private lesson verification form at the conclusion of every grading term.

Extra-Curricular Ensemble Performances

If a student rehearses and performs as a member of an extra-curricular ensemble that is coached by either a private instructor or an orchestra director, they will earn 3 points for every performance given. The literature performed must be different for each performance earning points. A few examples of performance opportunities would include solo and ensemble festival, chamber recitals, church services, fiddle group, GYSO, ASYO, etc…

Research Project

A student may earn points by doing a research project and presentation on a musical topic to be approved (in advance) by Mr Schroter.

GMEA Honor Orchestra / All-State Orchestra

A student who auditions for Honor Orchestra / All-State Orchestra will earn 3 points for each round of auditions attempted, regardless of being accepted into the orchestra. If the student is accepted in the ensemble, they will also receive 3 points for participating.

Tutoring middle school string players

You may pre-arrange with a Middle School director to come in and help them once a week in their class, or you may know a middle school string player in your community who would like you to tutor them. Please document sessions with the date and student’s teacher/parent signature for each session.

Service/Community – TBD by Mr. Schroter

Students will have various opportunities to support the KMHS Orchestra program and our community through service.  Examples: organizing, cleaning, stage crew, painting, assisting at feeder school concerts, event volunteering, etc.

Concert Attendance and Critique – 2 pts for professional / 1 pt for amateur

A student may earn points for any “art music” or “serious music” concert that they attend during the term. The student must bring in a copy of the concert program, and write a brief (1 paragraph) critique of the performance. A student may only use 5 high school or middle school concerts (in any combination) per term toward their point total, as the purpose of this enrichment activity is to expose our students to a higher musical standard such as college or professional ensembles.  Try to attend some performances at KSU, Georgia Symphony, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, just to name a few!

Not on the List? Talk to Mr. Schroter – TBD pts.

If you are doing anything that makes you a better musician through extra time and effort, or if you are doing anything that is benefiting the KMHS Orchestra program, please bring it to your director’s attention so that you can determine a fair amount of points toward your enrichment grade.
